Grosjean Vins
a 400 year old story

The origins

The first authentic records,found in the Historic Archive of the Valle d’Aosta, state that the first appearance of the Grosjean Family name was around the 16th cerntury. After the terrible Plague that hit the region in 1630, the population was drastically reduced, so the Duke of Savoie requested that families from Burgundy and Savoie move to the Valle d’Aosta to repopulate the area and work the land. Evidence shows that Grosjean settled on the Envers side of the valley, between Chambave and Fénis and cared for abandoned land until decades, sacrifice and much hard work later they came to possess an important amount of land that was suitable to the production of wine, destined for family consumption but also for the occasional local commerce.

As the Grosjean family grew they started to be renowned in the wine trade and their humble nature allowed them to sprout the seed for the subsequent local viticultural traditions typical of Burgundy.

The 60’s.

Many certuries later the Grosjean family name slowly faded until the appearance of our grandfather, Dauphin thatmanaged to give value to the fields that his wife had inhereted in the area of Creton, in the municipality of Quart. He decided to bottle the Cigliegiolo wine that he produced for the household and to present it at an important fair of the time: “II Exposition des Vins du Val d’Aoste”, in 1968. This positive experience brought out the entrepreneurial spirit in him and so managed to live off the fruits of the land.

the following years were dedicated to working towards replacing the fruit fields in favour of vines while still maintaining a smal production from the orchard. The family business now invloved his five sonsVincent, Giorgio, marco, Fernando and Eraldo, each specialising in a sector, either in the field or in the winery.

80’s and 90’s.

The last 20years of the century represent an important change in the quality of the wine. The Valle d’Aosta invests in scientific research in the viticultural sector and rediscovers the value of ancient varieties such as those world renowned nowdays: Fumin, Petit Rouge, Cornalin, Premetta, Mayolet.

The family business grows, the knowledge as well and value is given to the Vigna Rovettaz, an important historical cru, left unkept for centuries.

Sales improve and the Valle d’Aosta wine, thanks to being prized at important competitions, becomes nationally and internationally renowned.

Year 2000.

A new Grosjean winery was built to accomodate the increasing harvests and to greet gueasts wishing to taste our wines.

Business expands into American and japanese markets and quickly is sought out in important wine markets internationally.

In 2011 we received the organic certification, the first one awarded in the Valle d’Aosta and the only one for the following decade.

In 2015 2015 the winery expands to increase production to 140.000 bottles and to accomodate an increasing enological tourism, wishing to taste our Petite Arvine, Torrette, iconic Pinot Noir and Fumin.

In 2018 the jubilee winery of the Valle d’Aosta passes into the hands of the third Grosjean generation: Hervé, Didier, Simon and Marco.

Heroic Viticulture

Viticulture in the Aosta Valley is undoubtedly a Heroic practice. It concerns the practice of viticulture in remote areas where much effort and dedication is required.

We have the priviledge to work in one of the most precious areas on the planet and we are marveled daily by the surrounding beauty that makes us strive for the best distillation of this beauty in every single bottle that we produce.

We aspire to preserve and value this beauty.

Grandfather Dauphin was foward thinking in this respect as he already avoided the use of pesticides on the family land surrounding Aosta. Our fathers also strongly believed in this principle and the demonstration of their hard work was prized by the reception of the organic certification for our heroic Valle d’Aosta wines. Convinced of these beliefs the will was strong to assert them.

The third generation further consolidated these beliefs by applying these sustainable standards by implementing efficient energy producing technology. It is precisely from our home that good examples should be put in place.
